As Secretary-General of the United Nations (1953-1961), Dag Hammarskjöld believed our capacity to change globally must first begin with us as individuals. Only then can the whole be greater than the sum of its parts.
In his posthumously published journal entitled Markings, he wrote, “For all that has been — Thank you. For all that shall be — Yes.” UNITED invites visitors of Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, the “Gateway to the United Nations”, to interactively experience these words by activating portions of his text in brilliant light at various locations around the park. Through collective engagement and cooperation, the more locations that are interacted with simultaneously, the richer the experience becomes. The original text has been physically rearranged, leaving the viewer to determine what the words and phrasing mean to them.
